This book was splindiferious!!! It really surprised me.
My mind was set on this book after reading it. It touched me. I loved it! More then marvolus this book was! I would like to give special thanks to the wonderful woman who helped make this book be published, I know she worked very, very hard. She is my personal hero, somone who leads the troops, starts it all. I am proud to say this book was awesome!!

This book is GREAT!! I LOVED it! It was perfect for all ages
This book was fantastic in my mind. I couldn't put it down. I give it 12 stars. And 4 thumbs up! This book had meaning to me. It taught me a lot and I would really like to thank Paula Casey because I know she worked so hard to make this happen and to get the book published.

Fascinating chronicle of one of America's finest hours.
The Perfect 36 is a classic, and all too rare, story of individual political courage in Tennessee and how it wrote an inspirational chapter in American history. It describes in a compelling way the fragile nature of support for women's suffrage, but reminds us that men and women with convictions can truly change the course of history, and in this case, transformed the rights of women in the United States. An outstanding book by outstanding authors writing about events that should be taught to every school student.

How refreshing and what a joy to read a computer book that will make you smile and laugh along the way! Richard Sherman has a gift for demystifying the computer and making it fun. Forget the laborious manuals- just turn to "Ask Mr. Modem".

Five stars and three hearty cheers for Mr. Modem - keep those books coming, as you're the only one we know who can give us clear, easy-to-understand "geekspeak-free" answers. Bless you!

Forget wine! Bring this book as a gift!
This book is fabulous! I use computers and the web a lot and there are PLENTY of things in this book I find useful. And the price is right: perfect to bring instead of a stupid bottle of wine when you're invited to someone's home for dinner! The recipients of Ask Mr. Modem have been tickled at this gift! Also a perfect holiday gift for someone who I know not that well but wanted to give something. I'm here ordering my fifth copy of the book!

Most helpful book I've read.
I received a copy of "Ask Mr. Modem!" this past Christmas and it's the best computer book I've ever received (or purchased). I have a shelf of computer books, most of which I can't understand. This book, which is in question and answer format, is very easy to read. Just thumbing through it and seeing all the questions Mr. Modem answers, these are the same questions I've had. It's been a huge help to me and I've already given several copies of it to friends.

How to Make ESP Work for You
Published in Paperback by Fawcett Books (October, 1997)
Author: Harold Sherman
Average review score:

Astonishing
I read this book some 12 years ago and it changed my prospective of the world. Even if you are sceptic to paranormal phenomena, you will find this book credible and very useful. The writer is talking out of his personal experience and impresses with his radiating authenticity. What Harold Sherman has achieved throughout his fulfilling life is the impossible harmony between the matter and the spirit. He tried to tell us that it is after all possible to be good.. yet successful.

If You Read Only One Book On ESP Read This One
One of the most credible contemporary accounts, of and on the subject of Extra Sensory Perception.
I found this book by using one of the techniques Sherman teaches in it. For someone who has experienced one or more of the events we attribute to ESP, it is a great first training / teaching tool. He supports his claims and will fascinate the reader, recounting personal experiences over his life time.
The book takes one through a step by step process of learning to understand and utilize many facets of this little understood "extra sensory capacity" of the human mind.
Over all a great book for the uninitiated and interesting reading for those well familiar with the subject.

Greatest book about mind adventures I've ever read
This book changed my whole perception of the universe! I've noticed some ESP experiences before I read it, and this book confirmed I wasn't outta my mind and those weren't conincidences! Harold Sherman is of the best psychic in the US in the 60s & 70s, living in Arkansas with his family. He did a pioneering long distance ESp experiment with artic explorer Hubert Wilkins when Wilkins was in the artic. 80% of Sherman's records about WIlkin's activities & even thoughts while in the artic was correct! He's the man who can make coincidences happen and you can learn how. He can pick up your thoughts the first time he meets you. A deeply spiritual & warm man, his ESP books are filled with his life experiences with ESP.

My Dearest Cecelia: A Novel of the Southern Belle Who Stole General Sherman's Heart
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (March, 2003)
Author: Diane Haeger
Average review score:

Diane Haeger is a superb author
This is the 2nd book of hers I have read, and I loved it just as much as the first. She is an amazing writer and is now my favorite! I would recommend (and do) this book and any others by Diane Haeger to anyone.

A great Romance!
I really enjoyed this book. A very good historical romance that touched my heart.

IF I ONLY HAD MORE STARS TO GIVE.............
See the PS at the end of this- I've rationed myself and got through Chapter 4, trying to make this last as long as I can, but I had to go ahead and write. Diane Haeger has outdone herself. OK, I'm prejudiced. I have never enjoyed an author's works as much as hers, and I have not found another author of her caliber. I didn't think she could do any better than THE SECRET WIFE OF KING GEORGE IV, but this has already set itself up as such. The love story (based on a true story)between Cecilia and William is already so heartwrenching- to find a love so strong, so quickly, so true....and to be told by the world it would be destined to fail. These characters from the very beginning are so believeable and so realistic, you can close your eyes and envision them standing in front of you having their conversations. If you aren't familiar with Diane Haeger's works, RUN, don't walk, to your nearest bookstore. One quick warning- she sets the bar so high, you will be hard pressed to find another author that can come close to appeasing you until she sends us another book!

PS- I've finished and I can't begin to praise this book enough. One thing I enjoyed about this book that has been different from other Civil War era books is that you are not drowned in a history lesson along with the story. The author tells you enough to acclimate you to what is going on without going too far into details of the war and battles. As with all her books, you don't ever want them to end and find you have a hard time finding anything else to read that will appease you after this.

One Stick Song
Published in Paperback by Hanging Loose Pr (July, 2000)
Author: Sherman Alexie
Average review score:

A brilliant satiric perspective on American Indian culture
"One Stick Song" is a superb blend of poetry and prose by Sherman Alexie. The back cover notes that the author is a Spokane/Coeur d'Alene Indian, and indeed the main topic of this book is American Indian life and literature. Although Whitman is invoked in one of the pieces ("The American Artificial Limb Company"), I found Alexie's voice in this piece to remind me more of Kurt Vonnegut and George Carlin. The book is a mixture of outrage, wacky humor, and tenderness, with some really cutting satiric elements.

Some of my favorite pieces are as follows. "The Unauthorized Autobiography of Me" is an excellent, irony-rich extended prose poem which looks at, among other things, the business and politics of Native American literary production. This piece contains the memorable line, "Poetry = Anger x Imagination." "Open Books" is a satiric poem about poets and poetry itself. In this poem Alexie writes, "Let us now celebrate the lies / that should be true because they tell us so much." "The Mice War" is an unsettling, violent poem that takes place on a reservation landfill. This is just a small sampling of the treasures in "One Stick Song," a book which moves Alexie onto my list of favorite United States poets.

in your face reading
From the very first chapter this collection of poems blew me away. Sherman Alexie provides a raw and gritty insight into the contemporary American Indian ideology. His poems jump to life inside your imagination and seem to not want to die. Alexie helps people of all different backgrounds come to a better understanding of how things are in the real American world of misconceptions about American Indians and their beliefs and customs. He also challenges the way some people may view their own cultural lineage. At times his poems are very jovial and lighthearted, and at other times they are stark and quite sad. This is one of the best books i have ever read. I recomend this book to anyone who wants to see a different side to the way old ideas are challenged in new ways.

Most Personal Work to Date
One Stick Song is Sherman Alexie's most personal work yet. In these poems and stories, he reveals a side of himself that he has never truly exposed before... possibly even to himself. It is obvious that Sherman is finding the deepest parts of his soul in recent years, probably helped along by the birth of his as revealed by the final poem in the book "Sugar Town."

I have read all of Alexie's works to date, and mostly in the order they were written and I have enjoyed reading the growth of this truly great writer.

The Dark Side
Published in Paperback by Bloody Mist Press (15 December, 2002)
Author: David J. Sherman
Average review score:

New Pi Series off to a great start
You can tell just by reading this book that David Sherman loves the classic PI novels. You can almost feel Chandler in the background. It's well written and well executed. Hip, modern and enjoyable.

A well-conceived and well-executed story
One never knows where great writers will pop up. David J. Sherman has dabbled at a variety of vocations, from truck driver to record store owner. He turned to writing full time in 1998, starting with short stories, and joined all the writing organizations. The Dark Side is his first published mystery. Originally hailing from Racine, Wisconsin, David is now a Southern California resident with his wife, daughter, and black Lab named Emily.

Jack Murphy is a private investigator, having gone through one of the most painful experiences in his former life as a cop...accidently shooting a kid. His wife has left him for greener pastures, but still enjoys needling him. His secretary and he have a sexually charged relationship, and anyone on the outside can see they are mad for each other. Raymond Sanders hires Jack to find his missing daughter. This is Jack's first missing persons case, but it doesn't take him long to figure out that Carrie Sanders has become a sex slave to a high profile scumbag. His investigation leads from a child pornography video operation to the exportation of young girls to parts unknown:

"His eyes seemed to puff out and get redder than they already were. 'Look, I graduated from the New York Film Institute. I'm a real producer.' 'Why not get a decent job, then?'

Mike dropped his stare to the desktop. 'DiMarco runs some card games around town and I got into him deep. He told me I had a choice. I could either pay off my debt, or work it off.'"

Told from the traditional first person, private dick with Arturo "the muscle"as his sidekick, the plot of The Dark Side is old hat. However, David J. Sherman manages to infuse new life into the L.A. Confidential type of plot. Jack Murphy comes across as a guy with a lot of heart who needs taking care of by his tatoo decorated side kick, Arturo, who provides muscle and also a lot of heart. The twist is, in this case, the prominent businessmen are the true vultures and the struggling private eyes are the true heroes. Sherman's characters sparkle with emotion, as his plot draws the reader in for a ride that establishes a higher notch for right and wrong, justice and injustice. Sherman has produced a well-conceived and well-executed story that breathes new life into the concept of what has gone wrong in the world. An exciting and satisfying read.

An excellent page turner
A missing teenage girl disappears from a small town in Wisconsin and a desperate father pleads with Jack Murphy to find her. Jack normally doesn't handle missing person's cases, but after finding out the PI hired to find Carrie was murdered, Jack becomes intrigued.

What happens next is a page turning ride right to the very end of the book.

If you like a heart pounding, Raymond Chandler type of LA noir with a twist of compassion, read THE DARK SIDE.

The Illustrated Guide To Shark Etiquette: The Third Sherman's Lagoon Collection
Published in Paperback by Andrews McMeel Publishing (15 October, 2000)
Author: Jim Toomey
Average review score:

good collection
If you like to read Jim Toomey's daily comic strip, it's safe to say you'll really enjoy this collection. Rarely do I laugh out loud at books like these, but Sherman's Lagoon had me giggling the whole way through. This collection includes such mini-plots as the taping of 90210 at the lagoon, Fillmore's failed internet romance with a box turtle, and yet another visit by Thornton the polar bear. Toomey does great with a dark kind of humor, keeping adorable characters around for a week only to have them eaten live by Sherman or his gal Megan. If that's the kind of thing that will make you laugh, then go for it!

Never stale
The third book of Jim Toomey's (yes, aztecprincess, he IS darn sexy) hilarious strip "Sherman's Lagoon" shows no signs of waning or staleness. Few strips can achieve -- or surpass -- the surreality of Calvin and Hobbes, and this is one of those few. ("Liberty Meadows" is another, sadly not in books yet...)

It features doofus, perpetually human-hungry shark Sherman; irritable wife Megan (don't cross her if you value your life); Fillmore the nerdy and cultured sea turtle; Hawthorne the malicious and loudmouthed little hermit crab; and recurring character Ernest, sarcastic and geeky little fish.

Among the crazy adventures are: Bill Gates buys the island, Megan thinks she's pregnant, Fillmore actually gets a date (something is wrong, of course), the return of irritating Thornton the warm-weather polar bear, Hawthorne's annual shell-changing--and of course, lots of Sherman-chases-beach-apes-aka-humans and Hawthorne-pinches-beach-ape-toes!

The pop culture references in the isolated tropical island make a bizarre combo (Starbucks, for example) and the sight of a shark at a computer should theoretically be strained and overdone. However, given the colorful personalities and kooky situations at Kapupu Island, even sea boogers will find this entertaining in Toomey's skilled and skewed imagination!

Our wicked, sexy Jim Toomey DOES it again!!!
It must really BOGGLE the mind to think that such a handsome hunk like him could come up with such wacky, off-the-wall comedies under the sea! There's plenty of satire, parody, slapstick, lowbrow humor, and oooh...even a little risqueness to boot! (You just DON'T want to know WHERE the geeky Ernest holds his secret club!) Real sly, man.

Here in the third book, Sherman is his usual old man-eating self; Megan remains a shrewdish old missus; Fillmore continues to be your bookish cynic who just can't get a date; Hawthorne is still a stubborn and selfish old crab as usual; and the bespectacled Ernest is the very same computer-savvy nerd as ever before.

In other words, they are quite the same sea-dwelling characters we all know and love. Yet they are all caught up in the newest and silliest adventures - this time, in the show biz, the big romantic getaways, and the fishing contests. Why, they are even invaded by sea boogers, space dogs, and Bill Gates as well as a beached whale being talked out of a suicide and Megan getting PREGNANT!!! So just kick back and enjoy such a crazed fantasy world so lovingly conjured up by the Playgirl candidate!;)

Sherman Exposed: Slightly Censored Climbing Stories
Published in Hardcover by Mountaineers Books (August, 1999)
Author: John Sherman
Average review score:

A Sheepish Review
In this collection of short stories, John "Verm" Sherman has pulled together some of his stories from his published columns in Climbing magazine. Although the three or four travelogues dragged a bit, the majority of stories are amusing and, in some cases, really funny. For example, how can the theory of relativity be observed/proved by a man and woman? (Sorry for the tease -- you'll have to read the book to get the answer to this question.) Putting wooly ovine conspiracy theories at front and center of the evidence, the book certainly offers some evidence to the notion that boulderers are more at the flaky edge of the climbing world. Very enjoyable read.

Read it and weep - with laughing
Finally a book with climbing stories that are really worth reading. This book is very varied containing pieces that are fun, sad, informative, disgusting, interesting and many other things as well.

After all the "we climbed the first ascent of so and so in three days"-stories here's a collection of articles about climbing and life that would still be great reading even if they were not about climbing. There are pieces here that will make you laugh, ones that might make you mad, some will make you smile and quite a few will make you think.

If you are a climber who likes to read this book is a must have! All I can say is: will there be more?

Slim

One of a kind
Some boneheads don't "get" John Sherman's brand of humor, but that's their problem. This guy is one of the best climber/writers working today. I missed many of these stories when they were originally published, but even the ones I had read were a pleasure to read again. Some of the best were previously unpublished. Sherman has a knack, much like John Long, for lampooning climbers yet still writing heartfelt and unforgettable stories about the sport and its crazy mix of characters. I look forward to Exposed II.

The Shining Falcon

Author: Josepha Sherman
Average review score:

Amazing
This book is like a fairy-tale. When I first got it, I wasn't in the least bit interested in it. But, being bored, I opened it and read the first page. Four and half hours later, I closed the book, finished. I could not put it down for one second.

The Best Book On Earth
I absolutely love this book. It has come to be my favorite book, even though it was published a month before I was born. I picked it up in a thrift store for [price] I put it on the shelf in my room, and forgot about it. A year later I looked through my bookshelf, needing another book to read. I picked it out, and sat down to read it. I couldn't put it down! I read it before school, in school, and after I finished my schoolwork until two in the morning. After I finished it, I put it down, and told myself that if I ever found another book in the world that was better then that, I would scream at the top of my lungs until my death, and I'm not screaming now.

This book is an award winner.
It should be noted that this book won the Compton Crook award for being judged the best first novel in the genera by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society. That is a fine recomendation right there.
